Background

Florian Wirtz spent the majority of his youth career on the cards of his boyhood club 1. FC Köln.

In January 2020, his current club Bayer Leverkusen broke a nineteen-year gentleman's agreement and signed Wirtz from local rivals 1. FC Köln.

During May 2020, Florian Wirtz made his first ever appearance for the senior team against SV Werder Bremen.

Wirtz also played ten times for the under-17 team and four times for the under-19 side during the 2019/20 season.

The following season, Wirtz cemented his place in the senior team and also signed a contract extension until 2023 in December 2020.

In February 2021, the seventeen-year-old German became the youngest player ever to reach the landmark of five goals in the Bundesliga.

On the day of his eighteenth birthday that year (May 3rd), Wirtz signed another contract extension until 2026.

Florian Wirtz made his Germany senior team debut in September 2021 against Liechtenstein as a substitute.

The following season (2021-22), Wirtz achieved his best ever campaign by netting seven goals and ten assists in the Bundesliga.

However, an ACL injury in March 2022 meant that Florian Wirtz would be sidelined for a long period effectively ending his season.

In January 2023, Florian Wirtz played his first game since injury against Borussia Mönchengladbach as a substitute.

During the 2023-24 Bundesliga season, Florian Wirtz has excelled as one of the star players under Xabi Alonso and has helped them become real title contenders.
